Is there some sort of store where I can trade in my adult points for prizes? Maybe a faster internet speed or more calories per day? No? Well I’ll just sit here with my adult points burning a hole in my pocket, then.
I will admit, I still lean on my parents when it comes to making big decisions. From apartment searching to translating my Roth IRA statements, I generally revert back to my 13 year old self; pretending I’m old enough to make my own choices and know what’s going on, but really just following my parents down these new roads.
So, unsurprisingly, when it came to looking around for a new car, I hesitated until my father came out to visit me. We spent the day test driving, and I learned a lot about the difference between buying and leasing, SUV’s, compact cars, and trade in values.
I didn’t pursue buying a car that day, but my parents assured me that they would come back to help me out once the time was right (a four hour drive). I got a little excited about everything, and continued the process on my own. It was a really cool step for me, making this decision on my own. Granted, I gave my parents a call to ask their advice, but in the end, it was my decision.
After I cut the check and left the dealership, my heart fluttered a little. I was weirdly proud of myself. I signed everything, sitting alone, really for the first time with a decision like this. I had to take a big financial hit, which made me more nervous about the decision, but…adult points earned…I bought a car!
