Hey. It’s been a while. I’ll explain.
I finally did it. I took another step into the adult world and moved into my own apartment. I thought I was ready for it, but I quickly found out that I wasn’t. During my time as an undergrad, I never lived off-campus. I stayed in residence halls for the required 2 years, then became an RA. Because of that, I gained great resume-boosting skills such as interpersonal communication, teamwork, and conflict resolution…which was great for getting a job, but awful for learning to live on my own.
Move-in day was not as stressful as I thought it would be, mostly because I have great family and friends that helped me out. The bedroom furniture fit, the toilet worked, and everything was falling into place.
Then I went into a small panic. I had no food, not enough lighting, no decorations on the wall…nothing. Everything felt empty after everyone had left, and I realized I had nothing to do and nowhere to go.
I quickly realized that I had forgotten to call the cable provider to get cable and internet hooked up in the apartment. What’s more sad than having an empty apartment? Having an empty, silent, dark, lonely apartment with nothing to do (and before you judge me, think about how much TV you watch or internet you surf after dinner and before bed).
I frantically called the provider, and they had set up an appointment for three days later. I really couldn’t complain much about that! I was fortunate that I had some comp time at work to let me come home in the afternoon to get everything set up. Those three nights without any noises were pretty lonely, and my iTunes library on my phone could only get me so far.
Although my apartment is still couchless and overall empty, it’s still starting to feel a little like home. I have food in the fridge, dirty dishes in the sink, and my bedroom is starting to become a mess – just like it used to. I’m still getting used to the sounds of the apartments around me as well as the train that comes by VERY often, but I think that this step was pretty important for me to take.
