In the over-a-year that I’ve been living on my own, I’ve only been sick a few times. Nothing too terrible (oh, ok, except that time that I landed in the hospital), but this week I was hit by some virus that left me on the couch for a few days. When I was younger, or even in college, I didn’t mind being home sick too much, but now it’s different.
Being sick as a single 20-something who lives alone is something I probably won’t get used to. I was lucky enough that past Jackie stocked up on cold meds and tissues, but what if I hadn’t? I don’t have a roommate to run to the store for me, or my parents to make me soup. I didn’t have some strange near-death illness happen, so naturally this “problem” isn’t much of an actual problem, but it really has sucked.
I’ve been in a constant-fuzzy state for the past two days, which forced me to sit on my couch for hours at a time. No one has been around to yell at me to drink more water, ensure that I don’t have a fever. It’s weird being 100% responsible for my sick self…while I’m sick.
So, as I sit here mouth-breathing and looking at all the tissues around me, readjusting my position on the couch for the umpteenth time, I realized that this is just another “adult” right of passage thing that 20-somethings have to go through. Looks like I earned some points today.
Even though I’m going to pay for it later, being sick gives me an excuse to do whatever I want, or not do what I don’t want to do. So, in my sickness, I did a few things:
- Ate without stopping for two straight days
- Neglected to clean any piece of my apartment
- Have not showered in two days
- Watched a disgusting amount of television until my eyes were sore
- Ordered boneless wings and cheesecake for dinner…and had it delivered.
Yep, so I’m pretty much a disgusting mess, but that’s what being a 20-something is about, right?
Hope you’re feeling lots better! I am. I knew I was really sick when I didn’t even feel like watching TV the other night. 🙂
